Russia-EU Summit
On November 18, Stockholm will host the 24th Russia-EU summit. Russia will be represented by President Dmitry Medvedev and the EU by President of the European Council, Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
The two priority issues during the Swedish Presidency – climate change and the economic and financial crisis – will be discussed, as will energy issues, foreign affairs, trade policy and human rights
On the eve of the Summit, President José Manuel Barroso noted: “There are many issues on the global agenda today that neither EU nor Russia can address alone – such as climate change, and the financial and economic crisis. So, we have a joint responsibility to coordinate our efforts to revive the global economy, implement the decisions of the G20 meeting in Pittsburgh and finally to achieve an ambitious and comprehensive global deal at the Copenhagen Conference in December.”

Most of the controversy surrounding this summit seems to be around the venue: Russia tried to have the summit moved to Brussels because Sweden has been very critical of Russia’s role in the 2008 Georgia War. To add further fuel, Sweden wants to raise the assassination of human rights campaigners in Russia at the summit.
ECFR’s experts believe the prospect of another gas cut-off this winter could cause further friction. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin repeated threats last week that he will reduce Ukraine’s gas supplies if it fails to pay on time.
The Russian side remains seriously concerned about the unresolved problems of the Russian-speaking minority in the Baltic states, and about the trends of the politicization of history that are cultivated in a number of EU member countries.
The Summit will address international foreign policy issues like Afghanistan/Pakistan, non-proliferation, Iran, the Corfu Process and frozen conflicts in the Common Neighborhood as well as bilateral issues including the state of play in the negotiations on a New Agreement between the EU and Russia.
This is not the last meeting and a number of meetings will be held in future
President Saakashvili’s official residence in Bobokhvati became one more place for protest.
Georgia’s anti-government demonstrations that began on April 9 weren’t just in Tbilisi, nor were the protesters only from Georgia’s capital city.
While the bulk of demonstrators were in Tbilisi, gathering in front of parliament, similar protesters from Ajara and Guria moved towards the President’s official residence in Bobokhvati in Ajara. Some 50 cars and ten mini buses ignored the rainy weather as they converged on the Bobkhvati address in an attempt to find President Mikheil Saakashvili and show their dissatisfaction.
Ex Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli, a key opposition organizer, had inside information that the President would be in Bobokhvati. However, soon after arriving the protesters found that the president was not in his residence and the stream of people had to change their plans. They decided to return to Batumi and continue their protest by marching on foot from the cities entrance to a rally at the theater.
As the crowd gathered around the theatre, Nogaideli began to address a demonstration that lasted two hours. From 3 p.m till 5 p.m., 3,000-5,000 people stood in the rain and offered their fellow citizen protestors in Tbilisi solidarity.
“I can’t imagine a person with a sensible mind who won’t come here today to protest against this life,” said 67-year-old Nestan Beridze, who was holding an umbrella in her hands as she joined the crowd in the rain in front of the theater. In spite of her poor health, this woman was eager to stand and tolerate the cold rainy weather for over two hours.
Murman Dumbadze, Republican Party representative in Batumi, said, “demonstrations in the Regions will continue until Saakashvili resigns.” According to Mr. Dumbadze, he received information that about 4,000 people had gathered in Batumi on April 9th. Dumbadze himself joined his party members in Tbilisi where they gathered in front of the Georgia Public Broadcaster on the 9th of April at 1 p.m and then went on to join the main demonstration in front of parliament around 2 p.m.
“Every day must become the 9th of April until the president agrees to resign,” said Dumbadze.
Another representative of the Republican Party, a member of the Adjaran supreme
Council, Gia Masalkini, is also in Tbilisi. According to Mr. Masalkini “many active members of their party are in Tbilisi because they consider being here to be important.” They did not officially organize transport for regional protesters to get to Tbilisi so the main protest involving citizens from Adjara was held in front of the theater in Batumi on the 9th of April, he said.
No one can offer an exact number of protesters who traveled from Ajara to join the protest in Tbilisi. However despite the now sunny weather there are no protesters in front of the theatre in Ajara. It’s possible at least some of those protesters are still active and have moved to Tbilisi.
Family applies prosecutor’s office to investigate threats.
Family of Sergeant Roin Shavadze accused in drug selling and keeping killed in Batumi on 16 of august 2008 applied prosecutor’s office requesting investigation of the threats towards them.
As the Public Prosecutors office says, Shavadze was killed while trying to run away from police. Primary expertise showed that different parts of his body had been broken and 28 bullets were shoot in his chest.
Shavadze’s family says, the prosecutor’s office is not investigating the case. On November, 10 Tsitsino Shavadze, deceased Shavadze’s widow, and her brother, Murad Kontselidze appealed to the prosecutor’s office requesting investigation of the threats towards them.
Tsitsino Shavadze speaks about warnings towards her family members -” There’s about one week since different people are visiting me . At first one woman came and told me to keep silence. According to her nothing will change in this situation. In a case of my silence she offered me compensation. I explained that I am not going to trade with my husband’s grave after what they found my brother Phridon Kontselidze and began shadowing of his house. My brother appealed to police and now they are protecting his home.”
On November 13 the ombudsman, nongovernmental organizations, journalists, representatives of political parties, addresses prosecutor with an open letter asking for enforcement of legal acts to consider Tsitsino Shavadze as a victim and to allow her lawyer to the case of Roman Shavadze.
The lawyer Ramin Papidze declares that pressure come not only toward Shavadze’s family, but also toward him through offering his clients to. “Several of my clients addressed me that they were contacted from prosecutor’s office and offered to get a kind of arrangement in a case of my deliverance from Shavadze’s affair.” what is the worth Papidze says he even can’t look through the case about drug gaining and keeping in which Roin Shavadze was accused and which was the reason of his murder. Papidze stated, “If the prosecutor will give us ability to look in this case many questions will be answered.”
Tsitsino Shavadze addressed the public Ombudsmen Sozar Subari who promised her to send an open letter to all authority organizations and to the president with ask to control Shavadze’s case
Sopho Khorguani, the deputy Public Ombudsman said, “We are looking after this case, the ombudsman visited family and had a press conference. Our representatives visit family every day and even stay as duties there. The main thing now is investigation to be held correctly and to identify those people who threatened Shavadze’s relatives. “
Sopho khorguani said accredited diplomatic corps in Georgia are also paying attention to this case. Ambassador of France Eric Fournier received Tsitsino Shavadze last Monday and listened privately from her all materials. Sozar Subari also help Tsitsino Shavadze to meet European high council commissars in a field of human protection Thomas Hamarberg who also promised help
Contacting prosecutor’s office in Adjara several times answers were one and the same. The press center says that they do not have right to give this kind of information. Davit Sardeishvili, prosecutor of Shavadze’s case has injury from recent car accident and refused to give any kind of information.
Lawyer Madona Basiladze says: “as far as I know, investigation had began but it’s still unclear why the prosecutor’s office had merged two cases, one about Roin Shavadze’s murder and another about of his drug selling and keeping.”
All the information the Prosecutor’s office gives is that the expertise is still working and as soon as they are done, the lawyer will be able to study the case.
